Seth Priebatsch: The game layer on top of the world

Insight on what the future might hold towards the "gamification of the world"

"The previous decade was about building the framework for social connections.  This next decade where the game framework will be build.  The motivations we use to actually influence behavior and the framework in which that is constructed is decided upon."

NYT on video games in education 9/27/10

Basic rationale was to increase student engagement.  Some argue that it increases critical thinking or systems thinking or social skills or innovation or flow.   Some argue that games could replace tests by substituting the multiple levels of trial and error that lead to progress in games.  Lots of studies underway.  Jury is still out.

One MMORPG and the Workplace 9/1/10

Below you will find a few of my thoughts on how EVE Online teaches valuable skills relating to the workplace. These are not meant to be taken in relation to any specific item within my literal environment. Rather, they are simply my thoughts on my own experiences. Lost my ship! 6/28/10

Why should I care?  It's only a game!  But darned if I didn't care.  I was bummed.  How stupid of me to let myself be attacked by multiple enemy ships and not warp out of there while I still had some non-red cells on my shield/armor/structure gauge (Actually, at the time I didn't even realize what those red lights meant until too late.).  And how stupid to have filled up my cargo bay with all my transportable assets.  Lost them all!  At least I had enough sense to warp away in my pod or capsule thingy so my character didn't get killed.  And

Transmedia Studies and Online Gaming 6/21/10

Henry Jenkins posted another in an ongoing series of media studies on the topic of transmedia studies. I think gaming in a complex online world like Eve Online is one of the best examples of the use of transmedia studies in a community. Gamers in Eve regularly leverage information from forums, video tutorials, wikis, podcasts, in game voice chat and a number of media sources to learn and coordinate their gaming activities.

GA State Prof. Ted Friedman on Gaming 4/25/10

What Ted Friedman, Dept of Communications, Georgia State University, said on Gaming at the Knowledge Futures conference:

  • Computer games can reinforce cultural values, e.g., competition or challenge them
  • Students learn the games more by playing than by reading the rule books
  • Games have two aspects: "flavor" and "mechanics"
  • Games require collaboration or leveraging of others' work

"Why video games matter" 6/20/10

Title of a new book reviewed in the NYT.  The author argues that video games may not yet have shown any great intellectual or artistic merit, but the experiential dimension makes them more gripping than other narrative art forms like literature or film.
